The Venue
Located right next to the Plaça de les Glòries, the Teatre
Nacional de Catalunya (TNC), a building inspired by the theatres of Ancient
Rome. This work by the famous Catalan architect, Ricard Bofill, stands
out owing to the majestic colonnade surrounding the architectural ensemble.
The TNC is a complex made up of two structures. Designed after the Parthenon,
the main building houses the Sala Gran (900 seats) and the Sala Petita
(300 seats) of the Theatre, in addition to a foyer, an artists’
area, offices and all the supplementary services. It has a total area
of 20,000 square metres under a gable roof supported by 26 12-metre columns.
The second, auxiliary building has an area of 5,000 square metres and
is in keeping with the overall composition, having at once a traditional
and modern appearance. Located in this building are the studios of the
Teatre Nacional de Catalunya, where the Sala Tallers (400 seats) was constructed,
a multi-use hall suitable for all kinds of performances.
The Teatre Nacional de Catalunya
The Teatre Nacional de Catalunya came into being for the primary objective
of bringing together and putting on high quality theatre, as considered
from a national or an international perspective – theatre which,
both in terms of creative boldness and the service that is typical of
public theatre, fills a dramatic range that is defined by the wealth and
creativity of its initiatives.
